NASA held a club racing event on the East Track at the Wild Horse Motorsports Park.

This basically stock Miata was not there to race. It was there to drift. For real. Video is worth the watch.

Stock suspension and a straight pipe exhaust.

welded diff isn't really stock.

True, but the suspension is as old as the car, and the engine is as stock as possible for an NA6.

A cone filter and straight pipe is not like a huge improvement.

Welded diff is just one of the bare essentials for this car with this low of power to even drift dynamically like this and still be predictable.

I mean no one wants to see spinouts and donuts all day.

Kids, don't try this at home!

I need to learn how to drift.

Badly.

Drifting low power cars takes so much brute force... Props to the driver.

This would be the cheapest and best way to learn. If you can drift a Miata like this, then you will be able to drift almost anything. It conditions you to feel and predict what a car is doing while drifting and learn all the techniques needed for keeping drift and nailing transitions.

If you move to any car with a longer wheels base like the 240sx, then it will feel like you have more time to react and drift even better because your senses are already conditioned to listen to every twitch of the car.

Thanks! This was more of a "can it be done" type of experiment before getting into heavy modifications.

The car has already entered two more events to drift stock like this then it will be parked for heavy modification for drift competition. Planning on completion by end of May.

It will be drifting at the Import Face Off in Chandler Arizona the 26th, then Chuckwalla Valley Raceway Feb 8th.

There will be a video blog of the build and how a driver can go from video game drifting to competitive drifting with no professional training.

Looks like fun. However if I'd been the guy in blue jeans I'd have been screaming and crying and begging the driver to take me back to dry land. Ruin his day for him I know. It would be different if I were steering, but of course I don't know how to steer like that!

So don't ever take me out in your race car. Sorry but I'm old, got dem ol brittle bones, and I've been in five wrecks in my life and stayed in the hospital for days after two of them, fuck that, never again (at least if I can help it).
